SOS! My Hair won't grow. SOLUTIONS!!!
Saad 'Ata ibn Yasar, "Once a man came before the Prophet (peace be upon him) with his hair and beard unkempt. The Prophet (peace be upon him) made some gestures as though ordering the man to comb his hair. He did so, and upon his return, the Prophet (peace be upon him) remarked, 'Is this not better than one of you coming with disheveled hair, looking like a devil?'" (reported by Malik in Al-Muwatta)
Assalam Alaikum Waramatulah,
I greet you all with the best of greeting my dear hijabis. A lot of people especially non Muslims are of the opinion that hijabis have long, strong and fabulous hair, some even feel that must be the reason why hijabis hide those hairs.
In my humble opinion i feel the hair is whatever you make of it.You simply reap whatever you sow! Although genetics also plays a great deal in hair length, width and texture - A hair that does not get appropriate treatment based on it's type will not thrive.
Okay that been said, why is it that some hijabis have hair that simple do not grow?
To answer this question i will say all hair grow, except there is an underlining genetic condition, cancers or cancer treatment or the use of some anti-hypertensive drugs.
Hair only appears not to grow when the amount of shedding and breakage is more than the rate of hair growth, which should not be so.
Here are a few practices that causes hair breakage or make hair appear not to grow and their solutions.
1. Not washing the hair for more that 6months to 1yearSome people feel that putting water in the hair will make it break. That's absolutely wrong!!! Water causes shrinkage of our kinky African hair but it does not prevent growth. After washing your hair and air drying it a little, divide your hair into 4 to 6 portions and weave it, then loosen a day after or a few hrs. This strengthen the hair back.
A hair that is usually covered with the hijab should be washed with a shampoo and conditioner or conditioner alone (co-wash), every two weeks or every month for hijabis that do not exercise. If you exercise and have a very active life style then your hair should be washed every week. There are some exceptions to these recommendations however.
2. Constant use of Sulphated Shampoos
Shampoos keep our hair healthy, they are like a soap to the hair as a bathing soap is to the body. They remove product build-up in the hair, hair debris, sweat and other dead skin cells from the hair.
However shampoos are divided into two form. The sulphated and non sulphated shampoos.
The sulphated shampoo have more sulphur in them and are better adapted to removing more dirt from the hair. They are just like harsh soap to the hair. In the process of helping to remove hair dirt they also rip the hair of hair oil called ''sebum'' leading to a dried, brittle and damaged hair.
Note* Use more NON SULPHATED SHAMPOOS.
3. Reduce Stress
Stress is the number one cause of hair loss. Learn to take care of yourself and love yourself. Its not a sin to love yourself. Our creator loves us endlessly so why shouldn't we love our self.Create your own me time once in a while, do what you like to do. This boost our bodies level of antioxidants giving us a boost of energy.
4. Be Gentle on your hair and Scalp
Learn to loosen your braids gently and with a lot of care. Also file your nails and remove splinters from your fingers. Rough nails are not easy on the hair and not been gentle also causes single-stranded knots in the hair which ultimately leads to hair breakage and hair loss.
5. Massage your Hair and Edges
Massage your hair every week for about 5minutes with an essential or carrier oil, or both. This increases blood supply to the scalp and boost healthy and long hair.
6. Deep condition Hair frequently
African hairs and deep conditioning go together. If you do every thing right but do not deep condition your hair (baggy hair), you are actually on a very long thing๐๐๐. Your hair will only grow during the hot season and break like hell during the dry and hamattan season.
Work done zero!!!!!!!!!
7. Protect hair with wool
Wool is allowed islamically to protect our hair from harsh weather, ultraviolet rays etc. as far as i know. Hence use wool to thread or weave your hair and allow it to stay but for a month or 6 weeks as a form of protective style during the harsh weather conditions.
Don't expect a long and healthy hair if you are not consistent with hair routines.
